(a) A world record was se for the men’s 100-m dash in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing by Usain Bolt of Jamaica. Bolt “coasted” across the finish line with a time of 9.69 s. If we assume that Bolt accelerated for 3.00 s to reach his maximum speed, and maintained that speed for the rest of the race, calculate his maximum speed and his acceleration. (b) During the same Olympics, Bolt also set the world record in the 200-rn dash with a time of 19.30 s. Using the some assumptions as for the 100-m dash, what was his maximum speed for this race?

- At the scene of a car accident, the forensic investigator measured the skid marks from one of the vehicles to be 83 m long. He also knows the typical acceleration for a car when you slam on the brakes is -4 m/s2. The speed limit for this area is 100 km/hr (about 28 m/s). What is the maximum possible record for the pole vault likely to be? The correct answer is 14 ft.arrow_forward
- As a technical engineer in the army, you are part of a team in charge of testing and commissioning a new tankrecently purchased by the artillery.Field testing has revealed the following information:1) The tank moves from rest to a speed of 70 ??/ℎ? in 10 seconds.2) Using the breaking system, the tank is brought to a complete stop from a speed of 70 ??/ℎ? in 5 seconds. You are required to address all the questions below providing all calculations, graphs, and explanations asappropriate to back your answers The tank is to be placed on a hill that is 1 km high above the ground. The enemy’s base is located at a horizontaldistance of 10 km away and it is in a valley 0.5 km below the ground. Air resistance is neglected. Gravitationalacceleration is constant and equal to 9.8?/?2 downwards.a) If the bomb is to be fired perfectly horizontally, what should the launching speed of the bomb be in order tohit the target?b) What is the duration it would take the bomb to hit the target?c) Find x(t) and…arrow_forwardIn World War II, there were several reported cases of airmen who jumped from their flaming airplanes with no parachute to escape certain death. Some fell about 20,000 feet (6000 m), and some of them survived, with few life- threatening injuries. For these lucky pilots, the tree branches and snow drifts on the ground allowed their deceleration to be relatively small. If we assume that a pilot's speed upon impact was 123 mph (54 m/s), then what was his deceleration? Assume that the trees and snow stopped him over a distance of 3.0 m.arrow_forwardAn astronaut chillin’ on the moon drops her bag of Takis (doh!). g on the moon is 1.6 m/s/s. - The head injury criterion (HIC) is used to assess the likelihood of head injuries arising from various types of collisions; an HIC greater than about 1000 s is likely to result in severe injuries or even death. The criterion can be written as HIC = (aavg/g)2.5Δt, where aavg is the average acceleration during the time Δt that the head is being accelerated, and g is the free-fall acceleration. Shown is a simplified graph of the net force on a crash dummy’s 4.5 kg head as it hits the airbag during a automobile collision. What is the HIC in this collision?arrow_forwardThe rocket sled starts from rest and accelerates at a = 30 + 2t m/s? until its velocity is 400 m/s. It then hits a water brake and is acceleration is a = -0.003V2 until its velocity decreases to 100 m/s. (a) Determine the time the rocket sled reaches a velocity of 400 m/s in sec. (b) What total distance does the sled travel in meters? (c) What is the sled's total time of travel in sec.?arrow_forwarda motorist suddenly notices a stalled car and slams on the brakes, decelerating at the rate of 6.3 meter per second square. unfortunately, this isn't good enough, and a collision ensues. from the damage sustained, police estimate that the car was moving at 18km/h at the time of collision. they also measures skid marks 34m long. (a) how fast was the motorist going when brakes were first applied? (b) how much time was elapsed from the initial braking to the collision?arrow_forward
