Introduction:
Selective media:
The media that inhibits the growth of a bacterium at the same time aiding the growth of other bacterium through particular composition is termed as selective media.
Eg: Mac Conkey agar is a selective media for Gram negative bacterium.
Differential Media:
This media comprises of certain biochemical that differentiate visually the ability and inability of bacterium for undergoing specific biochemical process is termed as differential media.
Eg: Blood agar
Answer to Problem 1Q
Is blood agar selective or differential? Differential
Explanation of Solution
Blood agar is composed of defibrinated sheep blood, sodium chloride and nutrient agar. Based on the ability of the innoculated bacterium, to hemolyse the blood agar i.e. destruction of red blood cells and the kind of hemolysis occurred helps in identifying the bacterium. The three types of hemolysis are as follows,
- Alpha-hemolysis- Only partial damage of the red blood cells happens. −Normal Streptococci
- Beta-hemolysis-Complete hemolysis- Pathogenic Streptococci
- Gamma hemolysis- No hemolysis.-Normal Streptococci
