Calculate the cost of inventory destroyed in the fire by using dollar-value LIFO retail method.
Explanation of Solution
Dollar-Value-LIFO: This method shows all the inventory figures at dollar price rather than units. Under this inventory method, the units that are purchased last are sold first. Thus, it starts from the selling of the units recently purchased and ending with the beginning inventory.
Calculate the cost of inventory destroyed in the fire using dollar-value LIFO retail method.
For the year 2019:
Step 1: Calculate the amount of estimated ending inventory at retail.

Details | Cost ($) | Retail ($) |
Beginning inventory | 40,000 | 90,000 |

Goods available for sale – Including beginning inventory | 140,000 | 280,000 |
Less: Net sales | (200,000)
Estimated ending inventory at retail for 2019 | $80,000 |

Step 2: Calculate ending inventory at retail at base-year prices.
Step 3: Calculate inventory change at retail at base year prices.
Step 4: Calculate the change at relevant current costs.
Step 5: Calculate ending inventory at cost.
Hence, the ending inventory at cost for 2019 is $33,550.

Inventory Lost in the Fire
Particulars | Amount ($) |
Purchases in transit | 8,000 |
Undamaged goods salvaged | 5,000 |
Inventory after the fire | 13,000 |
Less: Inventory before the fire | (52,040) |
Inventory lost | $(39,040) |

Working note 1:
Calculate undamaged goods salvaged.
Therefore, the cost of inventory destroyed in the fire is $39,040.

- Inventory Costing and LCM Ortman Enterprises sells a chemical used in various manufacturing processes. On January 1, 2019, Ortman had 5,000,000 gallons on hand, for which it had paid $0.50 per gallon. During 2019, Ortman made the following purchases: During 2019, Ortman sold 65 000,000 gallons at $0.75 per gallon (35,000,000 gallons were sold on June 29 and 30,000,000 gallons were sold on Nov. 22), leaving an ending inventory of 7,000,000 gallons. Assume that Ortman uses a perpetual inventory system. Ortman uses the lower of cost or market for its inventories, as required by generally accepted accounting principles. Required: 1. Assume that the market value of the chemical is $0.76 per gallon on December 31, 2019. Compute the cost of ending inventory using the FIFO and average cost methods, and then apply LCM. ( Note: Use four decimal places for per-unit calculations and round all other numbers to the nearest dollar.) 2. Assume that the market value of the chemical is $0.58 per gallon on December 31, 2019.
