Chris Nguyen 08/11/2006 AP US History A Comparison of the New England and Chesapeake Bay Regions During the 1700's, people in the American colonies lived in very distinctive societies. While some colonists led hard lives, others were healthy and prosperous. The two groups who showed these differences were the colonists of the New England and Chesapeake Bay areas. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to economy, religion, and motives for colonial expansion. The colonists of the New England area possessed a very happy and healthy life. This high way of living was due in part to better farming, a healthier environment, and a high rate of production because of more …show more content…
Adulterers were marked as impure by a letter "A" stitched on their clothing, as in the book "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. As religion was a very high priority in New England, it was very much less severe in the Chesapeake Bay region. The one established church in the region, the Anglican Church of Jesus Christ, was only then established in 1692, more than 70 years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. Most people didn't even go to church regularly or participate in the Anglican Church. The differences in the two regions are not only seen in their religion, but can also be found in their economies. The economy of New England was far more inferior to that of the Chesapeake economy. This was because the New England society was family-oriented and primarily owned only small family farms just large enough to feed their families. Their economy was mainly based on small farming and fishing. This shows that New England was not focusing on economic growth and expansion. The Chesapeake Bay, on the other hand, had a vast economy. The population of Chesapeake Bay outnumbered New England's population nearly three to one. Their economy was mainly based on the tobacco and slave trading industries. These businesses contributed greatly to the Chesapeake Bay's economic and colonial expansion. This explains why people who came to the New World looking to make money chose to go to Chesapeake Bay rather than the New England area. Colonists
A very large reason the New England and Chesapeake regions were very different was because of their beliefs In Document A: A letter written for everyone on board of the Arabella-
The New England and Chesapeake colonists settled in the new world for different reasons like religious freedoms in the North and quick profits in the South.
The difference in development between New England and the Chesapeake Bay region was a matter of several issues ranging from freedom of religion, economy, the system of governing and most importantly, unity. What made these two societies differ was the effort
Today, the United States of America is a very racially and religiously diverse society. We saw the seeds of diversity being sown in the early days of colonization when the Chesapeake and New England colonies grew into distinctive societies. Even though both regions were primarily English, they had similarities as well as striking differences. The differentiating characteristics among the Chesapeake and New England colonies developed due to geography, religion, and motives for colonial expansion.
The New England and Chesapeake colonies had some similarities in economics but developed differently. Both colonies were founded to make money
New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled largely by people of English origin, but by the 1700’s they were two distinct societies. They differed politically, economically, and socially, and these differences stemmed from when people first arrived in the colonies to how the colonies grew over time.
During the late 16th century and into the 17th century, two colonies emerged from England in the New World. The two colonies were called the Chesapeake and New England colonies. Even though the two areas were formed and governed by the English, the colonies had similarities as well as differences. Differences in geography, religion, politics, economic, and nationalities, were responsible for molding the colonies. These differences came from one major factor: the very reason the English settlers came to the New World. The Chesapeake colonies were primarily created by companies interested in profiting from the natural resources of the New World such as gold or silver to bring back to England. The New England colonies were primarily created
America was looked upon as a place of prosperity and new beginnings in late 1600s and early 17th Century. European explorers brought back ideas of freedom and economic opportunity. Two regions in North America knows as the Chesapeake and New England regions were quickly inhabited by English settlers. Although the two regions would eventually come together as one, they both developed very differently in political, economical, and social ways. All differences between the Chesapeake and New England areas were mainly based on a search for religious freedom and economic success.
By the 1700’s the Chesapeake and New England regions had developed vast differences. Although both regions were settled by a group of people from the same location and a common culture, the two had developed into areas with little similarities. Differences between the groups can be seen when looking at the cultures of both areas. The New England and Chesapeake regions developed differently by the 1700’s because of political, religious, and economic reasons.
The people of the New England and Chesapeake colonies, although came from the same people, turned into very different cultures. For example, in New England, Puritanism was favored while in the Chesapeake region Christianity was practiced. Often times, religion would dictate a certain peoples way of life. Although both religions were strict, both had different ideas. Also, there were disagreements that occurred between the people within a colony. Many other ways of life were established in each of these areas independent of each other.
In conclusion, New England and Chesapeake Bay were both settled by a large population of English colonists. However, they differed from each other in many different ways. New England was more lenient about religion, wanted equality, and seemed to have a plan to begin governmental organization right from the get go. On the other hand the Chesapeake was a more fundamental Christianity, had an unstable political plan and had various issues in settling the territory. They both were unique and heterogeneous when it came to the running of society and how people functioned but that’s why so many English settlers came to the New World; to found their beliefs in a place where they would be accepted and
The Chesapeake included Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. A majority of this region was made up of black slaves due to the boom in the tobacco industry. The plantation owners relied heavily on the cheap labor of slaves and most of the region’s economy relied heavily on the tobacco and slave trade industries. Whereas in the New England region, which included the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Plymouth, New Haven, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, most of the population had been made up of Quakers, Puritans, and Catholics. The restriction of religion in the New England colonies had brought many of the people into that region.
In the 1700s, the New England and the Chesapeake region, which were settled largely by people of English origin, had evolved into two distinct societies. The regions were founded under different climates and for different purposes. In addition, the two has political, economical, social, and religious differences. Due to these factors, the two regions formed their own societies and had different ways of colonial life. New England and the Chesapeake region were formed on different foundations, New England was formed for religious reasons while Chesapeake was formed for economic reasons.
New England and the Chesapeake Bay region had evolved into two different sectors due to clashing roles politically, economically, and socially due to the fact that one found bliss in wealth and gold and the other glorified god in all aspects of their lives. The Chesapeake Bay province embodied a legislative assembly while the New England colonies were founded based on religion and were more democratic. Land in New England was deficient and had manufactured goods unlike the south of them, the Chesapeake had proficient soil and large plantations for agriculture. Socially, one of the regions lacked stability because of indentured servitude. The founding principles greatly influenced how these Englishmen of the same ethnicity had starkly distinct societies.
While New England and the Chesapeake region were both settled and ruled by the English, by the year 1700 they evolved into two very separate, distinct societies due to geographic, political, religious, social, and economic differences.
