The industrial revolution was not only technological revolution but a social one that would lie foundation that would grow the word “revolution” exponentially. The industrial revolution brought with it change, whether that change was positive or negative is questionable however it did change the world as it was known. In both England and the United States of America strong industrial revolutions struck, the revolutions would change roles in the household and society for both women and me and the ideologies held about gender roles. In both countries effected by the revolution, industrialization challenged religion and authority, the impact of which can still be seen today.

Most machines had no safety devices, meaning that one mistake could result in a lost limb, and in worse cases a lost life. Sometimes, workers would even fall asleep in the middle of working next to an unsafe machine. Children were basically taken advantage of in the factories since their small hands and bodies could fit where the adults’ could not. Their job was often to change spools in the humid textile mills or to repair broken machines or threads. The children were young and uneducated and were not aware of the hazards all around them, such as the huge machines. They faced whippings when making a mistake or disobeying. Despite not having the same physical strength and stamina as men, women (and children) were forced to crawl on their hands and feet and drag a bucket of coals (Betty Harns). They suffered long hours everyday only to receive little pay. The common people had to endure this barbaric work just to end up dying at a young age from disease and other health issues. Also, according to Child Labor in Factories, the work was very dangerous, injuring or killing children on the job. These poor kids were always at risk of dying to, also, receive little to no pay. It is worse for the orphan children, though. They sometimes did not even get paid at all, and the employers justified their absence of payroll by claiming they fed and housed the children (source 11). The children were beaten if they were found sleeping on the job and were forced to walk the streets naked if they were late to work. The Industrial revolution was a pivotal time in the worlds history due to the major advances in many fields such as; Industry and agriculture that occurred between the 18th and 19th century. Advancements such as developments in medicine, housing and inventions and more, had direct effects on many key aspects of what is here today. Conditions for those who lived in the time were not easy, wages were low, lack of safety, and general living conditions were all round terrible. Yet many of things first brought about in the time period shaped what we have today and were the early building blocks to modern creations.

While society did receive obvious benefits from industrialization, such as lower cost of goods and higher standard of living, factory workers, who made up 80% of the workforce at the time of the industrial revolution, were the ones who payed the price. The costs of industrialization included long hours of grueling labor, unsafe conditions, and corrupt managers exploiting workers for their labor; most laborers worked 10 to 14 hours a day, six days a week, with no paid vacation or holidays. In addition, the working conditions of the factories were extremely poor and contained many health and safety hazards, such as exposed moving machinery/cogs which could crush a worker’s limbs in textile mills, or high temperatures and toxic vapors in steel and iron manufacturing plants. Furthermore, because no workman’s compensation laws existed at the time when the industrial revolution began workers who were injured were often abandoned from the moment they had an accident, their wages are stopped, no medical assistance was provided, and no matter the extend of the injury no compensation was required to be payed.

During the time of the Industrial Revolution there was great suffering amongst the working class. Extreme human labour was forced upon the workers to keep the Industrial Revolution alive. Many examples of this can be seen through the living conditions, the rights of the workers and child labour.

The Industrial Revolution had many negative affects on people. Many people worked from home before the Revolution. Raw materials were delivered to people's cottages and the weavers would process the wool in their homes. This was an advantage for the workers because they would make their own schedules and work at their own pace; however, for these same reasons, they were disadvantages for business owners. The Industrial Revolution made it possible to move the jobs from cottages to factories where they business owners can oversee the workers and account for their time. Some people considered the factory jobs a blessing while others considered it a hardship. The work day was long, conditions were unsanitary and food was sparse.

One of the positive effects that came from the Industrial Revolution is modern buildings and inventions. The rise in population forced the developers to build homes for the many people moving to the city. Urban middle class people lived in homes that screamed wealth.
