A well thought out critique of one’s actions or thinking is immensely valuable. While hearing this constructive criticism may be uncomfortable, the information one gains from another’s insights is advantageous. When my colleague and I were discussing our self-assessments two points of importance came to light. First, the thirst for knowledge and never being satisfied with the amount of material I have learned is a strength of mine and a path in which I will continue to travel down. Secondly, issues in my thinking process in which I thought were minor, became major areas of concern. In particular, my preexisting unconscious biases are impairing my thinking and could potentially be detrimental to my patients in the future. However, if I can confront …show more content…
My curiosity along with the passion I have for this profession has lead me to consistently seek out and acquire new knowledge. I go beyond what is being tested in any one class and pursue a greater in-depth understanding in my academics. While discussing my self-assessment with a classmate I became aware that not all students think the same way about our classes. Another student may study hard and acquire knowledge that is relevant to an upcoming test, but often the pursuit ends there. My curiosity doesn’t allow this. The desire I have to acquire new knowledge is a force that pulls me towards studying and not something I have to push myself to do. These are areas I scored myself as a four or five on the self-assessment. On the contrary, the following areas I identified as weaknesses and scored myself accordingly. This scoring was further reinforced as a result of the reflection with a …show more content…
The next step is to take action and work towards correcting this issue. This is where Bloom’s Taxonomy will prove to be beneficial. By utilizing this learning domain, I can create and implement a framework that will be applied to my process of thinking. The goal will be to identify and evaluate any biases in my thinking in an effort to not allow them to influence my judgement. This process may be slow and tedious, but ultimately it will allow me to provide better care to my patients in the future The American Physical Therapy Association created this core values self-assessment as a way to analyze one’s thinking and actions as it relates to our profession’s values. I believe it is essential to periodically complete assessments like this one, in addition to seeking critiques from fellow students and colleagues. This feedback will allow me to continue to identify areas where I am not measuring up to the high standards our profession has set so I am able to make the appropriate changes in order to be the best possible physical therapist as I continue pursuit of serving
Personally speaking, critical thinking is an undervalued and underutilized tool. When confronted by a problem with another person, most people just react. In these situations, I have learned to take a step back, take an objective look at the situation, and make an informed judgment/decision. By applying critical thinking to my personal life, friendships, marriage, and my relationship with my children will have a greater chance of success and less negative confrontation.
Over the last thirty years, the health care system has incurred dramatic changes, resulting in new advances in technology and medical theories. Greater demand for quality care by consumers, more knowledgeable patients, remarkable disease processes, shorter hospitalizations, and the continuing pressure to lower health care costs are all contributing factors in the necessary changes to the nursing practice. In order for nurses to deliver optimum care, they must develop a higher quality of thinking capability. We will review the information given in this research paper to discuss the impact of critical thinking in the nursing profession, as well as the various strategies / techniques used in assisting
I believe that my personal and professional growth and behavior as a physical therapist is of utmost importance. I base this firstly on my strong connection to those in society who are disadvantaged when it comes to physical therapy, and also on the movement system, movement being “the key to optimal living and quality of life for all people that extends beyond health to every person’s ability to participate in and contribute to society” (American Physical Therapy Association, 2013). This perspective, I believe, is aligned perfectly with the vision statement for the physical therapy profession – to transform society through optimization of movement to improve the human experience (APTA, 2013). After reviewing the vision statement, I strongly believe it will act as my guide by strengthening compassion, reinforcing advocacy, improving quality of service, and strengthening cohesion.
If you look at any company or organization, you are bound to find a list of values, things that others view as positive qualities in a person. These could be things such as honesty, knowledge, diligence, and compassion. Values set up a foundation for the organization, something for their employees to follow and exemplify in their service to the general public. Employees can use their organization’s values to see what their strengths are and where they need to improve. Values also provide a reference point when hiring new employees, helping employers to see which individuals are already living the organization’s values. The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) has such a list of values, which they refer to as ‘Core Values’. These are Accountability, Altruism, Compassion/Caring, Excellence, Integrity, Professional Duty, and Social Responsibility. It is important for me, as a future Physical Therapist Assistant, to look at the APTA’s Core Values and see where my strengths and weaknesses lie.
This assignment will showcase your ability to recognize and examine argument structure. Please be sure to follow all of the assignment guidelines, which your instructor will give to you in class or listed below.
The two professional values from the Core Values of the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) that best correlate with my personal values are compassion/caring and integrity. Personally, I believe that compassion/caring should be the most important value for physical therapists. Many of our patients will be overcoming an adversity and it is important that physical therapists can sympathize and show concern for their suffering. Compassion is not only a feeling but also works to promote action; it forces someone to not only recognize a hardship but also working to alleviate it for the person. Although compassion and caring are similar, caring encompasses more attributes that contribute to compassion. One of these attributes of caring
Voltaire once said, “No problem can withstand the assault of sustained thinking” (“Voltaire Quotes”) What Voltaire intended to convey was that extensive and critical thinking can allow people to arrive at rational solutions to problems. This is one of the reasons why the significance of thinking critically has become a popular issue that is discussed about in educational systems nowadays. It is imperative that students develop critical thinking skills and not just blindly be taught what to think, but rather how to think. Pure memorization will not lead to authentic learning; instead, encouraging critical thinking is what will help students evaluate problems and make reasonable decisions. As humans are susceptible to emotions, critical
After reading " CLUES to Critical Thinking" in chapter 5, I disagree with the Supreme Court's decision to allow Law enforcements to strip search an arrested individual who had only committed a minor offense. The Fourth Amendment clearly states that, "The right of the people to be secure in their persons against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated. Unreasonable can be defined as not guided by or based on good sense, which in this case, strip searching an individual for a minor offense can be seen as unreasonable. The only time a cop should be able to strip search you is when the officer has a reasonable suspicion that you are either carrying contraband or an illegal weapon, that is what strip searches are for. It is not
The Purpose of this paper is to apply the 10 steps developed by (Browne & Keeley, 2010) and I will apply those methods on the following memo. A memo was drafted by Ms. Mary Ford (personal communication, January 30, 2012) who is Director of Amalgamated Public Employees Union (APEU) Local No. 121 to Mr. Hector Fuentes the President of APEU Local No. 121 on the issue on New Mexico State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) Outsourcing, proposed by the New Mexico Governor Gloria Gainor. In the book “Asking the Right Questions, A Guide to Critical Thinking” M. Neil Browne and Stuart M. Kelley discuss the ten steps to critical thinking. In the following pages I will apply these steps to a memo that was sent to Mr. Robert Shaw of Triad Insurance Company of Indianapolis and discuss them in detail. The memo was from Ms. Denise Khali, Vice President of Human Resources. D. Khali, personal communication, October 04, 2010.
Only thinking about how things should be, rather than appreciating and dealing with how things are in the present are known as “should” statements. If the word “should” appears in a statement regarding oneself, it is generally a “should statement”. “Labeling and mislabeling” causes harsh self-labels to the patient and to those around them. The final common pattern of faulty thinking is personalization. This had been the most profound trouble for this student. “Personalization” causes us to blame ourselves for things that we have no control over. An example would be taking the blame for someone else’s anger.
When the Judge admonished the Jury, he told them they must reach a unanimous decision beyond a reasonable doubt. The "hero" of this movie appears to be Henry Fonda, the first juror to vote "not guilty". He kept challenging the evidence by saying "isn 't it possible?"...that the evidence was wrong. Do some critical thinking on this...using a good paragraph answer if "isn 't it possible?" is the same thing as "beyond a reasonable doubt." Start with a “yes” or “no” and then eleaborate.

The concepts of critical thinking and creative thinking are both gaining increasing importance in the world today. Critical thinking allows people to understand difficult concepts in a manner that is clearer and more defined. They can more readily understand those concepts if they employ critical thinking. In all portions of everyday life, a person is expected to make independent judgments. Those judgments are based on experience and knowledge. Without the ability to think critically, every situation that a person comes across would have to be considered in isolation from all other situations. When a person encounters a problem that is a new one, he or she may be able to use critical thinking to solve those problems.
