Since the American Red Cross was founded, the organization has helped millions of people ranging from war to natural disasters.. Also, the Red Cross feeds the volunteers, helps families contact each other, provides blood to disaster victims, and helps those affected by disaster to access other available resources. The American Red Cross (ARC) is an organization that was founded in 1881 by Clara Barton and established itself as the most well-known emergency relief organization devoted to the care of war victims, disaster victims, and the suffering worldwide. Unfortunately, the ARC has been plagued with a high executive turnover, slow response to disastrous events, and mismanagement of donation funds. These problems now have the ARC facing another problem, fixing their credibility for the future.

The American Red Cross is an important entity in the world today. In fact, the organization was created over 100 years ago and has done nothing but grow. This is an organization that went from caring for wounded soldiers to being the guiding spirit of many families when disaster of any kind strikes. The American Red Cross must be strong and organized to handle such a large role. Unfortunately, they are usually not strong or organized.

Emergency assistance, which is needed whenever there is a fire, hurricane, flood, and other devastating event, is also crucial in times of need. There are many different ways to volunteer during the holiday months. The angel program is a program that allows individuals, families, or groups select a child or a senior citizen to provide a special Christmas to. The toy shop is a place where parents shop for gifts at no cost for their children ages 1-13. Volunteers fill stockings for children and senior citizens in the stocking program. The Salvation Army holds holiday meals on Christmas and Thanksgiving at the army shelter for anyone. Holiday food boxes, boxes of non-perishables, are given to those in need. There is also the renowned Kettle Campaign, where bell ringers stand outside of businesses and parks collecting money in red kettles, helps pay for all of the Christmas programs the Salvation Army holds. Undoubtedly, the American Red Cross has done many wonders over the course of its existence. Whether it is providing relief from disasters, aiding the less fortunate nationally and internationally or saving lives with their blood program, the Red Cross has always been there to help the world become a safer place to live in. Most recently, this organization has had a strong impact in the recovery of “Superstorm” Sandy and Hurricane Isaac, providing food and water, multiple shelters for people that have lost their homes and even counseling during such a devastating time (“Top 20 Accomplishments”).

Every year, there are approximately 150,000 deaths and 200 million people affected by natural disasters and humanitarian crises (Thomas, 2003). Natural disasters alone, which include various occurrences, cause substantial disruptions such as the temporary displacement of more than five million people. According to the Fritz institute, statistics show that uprooted people from humanitarian crises such as civil conflict and war is greater, with an average of 13 million refugees and 20 million internally displaced people each year. As the biggest worldwide participants in the relief effort in the global community, disaster relief organizations are the forerunners of the help supplied to people affected by catastrophic events.

The American Red Cross is a non for profit, congressionally chartered organization. Its primary focus is to give help anywhere that is needed both here and abroad. The American Red Cross uses its resources, time, and money to help five major areas, which are aiding people affected by disasters in American, supporting members in the military and their families, collecting blood for process and distribution, health and safety education and training, and international relief and development (American Red Cross). The Mission Statement of the American Red Cross is “The American Red Cross prevents and alleviates human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors” (American Red Cross).

To believe in The American Red Cross, takes more than will, it takes history and facts: The American Red Cross Blood Donor Service began during WWII, where 13.3 million pints of blood plasma was collected for use by the armed forces. The first nationwide civilian blood program was introduced by the Red Cross after the war (The American Red Cross, 2012): Today, the American Red Cross Biomedical Service is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States, collecting and processing more than 40 percent of the blood supply and distributing it to some 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide (The American Red Cross, 2012). On the same note, the group provided relief when the 35-W bridge collapsed in Minnesota. It helped, this past year, to rebuild houses that fell victim to California wildfires too. Post disaster aid comes in many forms. Food relief, site clean up, site repair, blood donations, blood transfusions and other types of medical aid are some of the forms of relief. Although, disaster reliefs and blood donations are crucial in our society today; this is not the only type of service the Red Cross provides for us.

Along with all the other families who were affected by the hurricane, in less than a month they were living their lives just as they used to. Since the family was so grateful they now donate blood to the association every blood drive and they donate gifts and money to the association occasionally. The community also decided to create a fundraiser for the program in order to bring them all back together for another great cause. It was during 1919 in Paris after World War 1 had just finished, when the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies was founded (IFRC). The idea of having such a symbol as a Red Cross came from Henry Dunant in 1859. It all started when Dunant witnessed a bloody battle scene in Solferino, Italy. Over 40,000 men laid dead or wounded in the battlefield without any medical help. It was from there and on when Dunant became determined to pass the Geneva Convention, which would eventually become the Red Cross association.
