A Fit for the Job
Frank Clayton is the manager of a small construction firm of 10 employees. The firm
engages in lucrative renovation projects to help home-owners build their dream
homes. He got his start in New Aiyansh shortly after the Nisga'a Treaty was signed,
but as demand grew for his business's services in Terrace located nearby, he decided
to move his business there.
Frank's daily jobs include talking to customers on the phone, handling complaints,
sending people to provide quotes for customers, coordinating staff for any given job,
ordering supplies, consulting with experts on staff to determine the best
methodology to achieve the job, keeping a maintenance schedule of equipment,
employee hiring and retention, disciplining employees for poor performance, and
training new carpenters.
Lately, Frank has been feeling tired. He wants to enjoy retirement soon, but that also
means handing off his business to one of the younger people on staff. On one of his
few days off, Frank went fishing and determined after 20 years running the business,
he's ready to call it quits. His plan is to select a new person to lead the company and
to train that person for the next 6 months before formally handing the reins over.
He has 3 internal employees in mind, along with the possibility of hiring an outside
person for the job. All of the people involved are competent carpenters but have
different strengths and weaknesses. He analyzes all their leadership traits and makes
notes. The result of his analysis is show on the candidates list.
Frank brings his analysis to you. Who do you think he should let take on the job?
