To understand: The process of carbon dioxide molecules in photosynthesis reaching the chloroplast of leaves.
Introduction:
Photosynthetic cells are essential to the production of complex organic chemicals used by most living things for energy. Green plant cells, phytoplankton, and cyanobacterial cells are all examples of photosynthetic cells. Photosynthesis is the process by which cells convert CO2 in the presence of sunlight into sugar molecules and oxygen. The photosynthetic cell uses these simple sugars as building blocks to produce glucose and more complex compounds. Then, cells employ glucose and oxygen for the synthesis of energy-rich carrier molecules like ATP (adenosine triphosphate), while producing carbon dioxide as a waste product through respiration activities.

- Why were chloroplasts selected for the pigment extraction in the virtual lab? The researcher in the virtual lab was using waste from a fish farm to provide nutrients for the algae. What was the algae going to be used for in order to reduce CO2 levels in the city? You look at all the activity here - there's so much going on! Something looks a bit off though. Ms. Frizzle announces to everyone: "Keep your hands inside the bus everyone! I was told this tree has been treated with a chemical that shuts down Photosystem I." That makes sense with what you're seeing, you think. What do you see happening at Photosystem I? - For photosynthesis lab in biology 1) This lab uses spinach leaves. Name another plant that would make an interesting comparison to spinach. Explain why you think this leaf would provide an interesting comparison 2) The lights used in this experiment are 60W. What would you predict the effect of having stronger or weaker wattage bulbs would be on your results? Explain. 3)This lab uses 0.2% sodium bicarbonate. What would you predict the effect of raising or lowering the percentage would be on your results? Explain. 4)What are TWO other things that might be manipulated in an experiment using this same protocol other than the type of leaf, percent sodium bicarbonate, and wattage of light bulb? 5) What key thing do you have to look for on the graph to know for certain that your treatment has caused a significant effect?arrow_forwardWhich best describes cyclic photophosphorylation? - MAKE CONNECTIONS Explain how nitrogen andphosphorus, the nutrients that most often limit primaryproduction, are necessary for the Calvin cycle to functionin photosynthesis (see Concept 10.3).arrow_forwardQ) Start with a photon of sunlight and a carbon atom in a molecule of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere: model/diagram their pathway from that starting point to their final destination as a glucose molecule that is used for energy in a cell in the plant root. Following your diagram/model, provide a written explanation for what your diagram/model depicts. Make sure both your model and explanation are clear, concise, and have the appropriate level of detail to clearly demonstrate you understand photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and the movement of mass and energy in plants.arrow_forwardQ)Start with a photon of sunlight and a carbon atom in a molecule of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere: model/diagram their pathway from that starting point to their final destination as a glucose molecule that is used for energy in a cell in the plant root. NOTE- include the steps of photosynthesis (light-dependent reactions, ETC, Calvin cycle) and the inputs and outputs at each. Then, need to explain how sugar gets transported from the leaf to be used in cell respiration in the root. Then need to diagram cell respiration, including each stage and the inputs and outputs.arrow_forward
