Chapter 19, Problem 69P
SSM The envelope and basket of a hot-air balloon have a combined weight of 2.45 kN, and the envelope has a capacity (volume) of 2.18 × 103 m3. When it is fully inflated, what should be the temperature of the enclosed air to give the balloon a lifting capacity (force) of 2.67 kN (in addition to the balloon's weight)? Assume that the surrounding air, at 20.0°C has a weight per unit volume of 11.9 N/m3 and a molecular mass of 0.028 kg/mol, and is at a pressure of 1.0 atm.

In 1992, a Danish study concluded that a standard toy balloon, made from latex and filled with helium, could rise to 10,000 m (where the pressure is 1/3 of that at sea level) in the atmosphere before bursting. In the study, a number of balloons were filled with helium, and then placed in a chamber maintained at −20°C. The pressure in the chamber was gradually reduced until the balloons exploded, and then the researchers determined the height above sea level corresponding to that pressure. Assume each balloon was filled with helium at +20°C and at about atmospheric pressure. Determine the balloon's volume just before it exploded, if its volume when it was first filled was 500 cm3.
A bubble rises from the bottom of a lake of depth 69.4 m, where the temperature is 4.00°C. The water temperature at the surface is 18.00°C. If the bubble’s initial diameter is 3.30 mm, what is its diameter when it reaches the surface? (Ignore the surface tension of water. Assume the bubble warms as it rises to the same temperature as the water and retains a spherical shape. Assume Patm = 1.00 atm.) Density of water is 1.00 × 103 kg/m3 (see Table B.5).
A copper washer is to be fit in place over a steel bolt. Both pieces of metal are at 38.O°C. If the diameter of the bolt is 1.0000 cm and
the inner diameter of the washer is 0.9980 cm, to what temperature must the washer be raised so it will fit over the bolt? Only the
copper washer is heated. Coefficient of linear expansion a for copper is 16.0 x 10-6 K-1.
