Chapter 21, Problem 21.90P
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

A synthesis of 2-methylpentane-1, 3-diol using inorganic reagents and alcohols containing three or fewer carbons is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

Pyridinium chlorochromate (PCC) is used for oxidation of primary alcohol into an aldehyde. It changes secondary alcohol into ketone. Nucleophilic addition reactions take place on the electrophilic carbonyl carbon by nucleophiles. NaOEt is act as a strong base and used for making enolates in the carbonyl condensation reaction. The β hydroxy carbonyl or αβ unsaturated carbonyl undergoes aldol condensation reaction produces the desired product.
