Chapter 24, Problem 24.15YT
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Using Figure
Concept introduction:
The Frontier molecular orbital (FMO) theory focuses on the interaction between the HOMO and LUMO of the reactants. A reaction is allowed if the HOMO and LUMO have significant interaction in the transition state and is forbidden if they do not. The frontier orbitals involved in a Diels–Alder reaction have the appropriate symmetries to interact, so the reaction is allowed.

In each case, assign the correct configuration of R or S, 1 is highest priority, 4 is lowest priority.
Which of the following compounds can arise directly from a Diels-Alder reaction? Please circle any structures that can, and
then identify the appropriate diene(s) and dienophile(s) that would lead to that compound. Be sure to pay attention to E-IZ-
stereochemistry in all of the reactants. For those that cannot undergo a Diels-Alder reaction, please explain why.

A Diels-Alder Reaction was conducted involving the mixture of E,E-2,4-hexadien-1-ol and maleic anhydride. The IR data of the product (from an experiment) is attached.
Please compare to determine if the experimental IR is consistent with the predicted product?
IR spectra of the starting materials are shown below. The alcohol is shown in absorbance instead of transmittance, so try to imagine it inverted.
