To find: The appropriate words to fill in the blanks.
Answer to Problem 2E
Key, test intervals.
Explanation of Solution
Given information:
A statement is given as -
"To solve a polynomial inequality, find the ________ numbers of the polynomial, and use these numbers to create ____ _____ for the inequality"
Calculation:
A polynomial changes its signs only at zeros. And between two consecutive zeros a polynomial is either entirely positive or entirely negative. There, real zeros of a polynomial divides real line into intervals in which the polynomial does not change its sign. A test value is taken from each interval and corresponding value of inequality is calculated (whether positive or negative). The inequality maintains same sign for whole interval.
Thus, to solve a polynomial inequality, find the key numbers (zeros) and use these numbers to create test intervals for the inequality.
Hence, appropriate words to fill in the blank would be −
Key, test intervals.
