Concept explainers
Fluoridation of city water supplies has been practiced in the United States for several decades. It is done by continuously adding sodium fluoride to water as it comes from a reservoir. Assume you live in a medium-sized city of 150,000 people and that 660 L (170 gal) of water is used per person per day. What mass of sodium fluoride (in kilograms) must be added to the water supply each year (365 days) to have the required fluoride concentration of 1 ppm (part per million)—that is, 1 kilogram of fluoride per 1 million kilograms of water? (Sodium fluoride is 45.0% fluoride, and water has a density of 1.00 g/cm3.)

- Suppose that you are closing a cabin in the north woods for the winter and you do not want the water in the toilet tank to freeze. You know that the temperature might get as low as 30. C, and you want to protect about 4.0 L water in the toilet tank from freezing. Calculate the volume of ethylene glycol (density = 1.113 g/mL; molar mass = 62.1 g/mol) you should add to the 4.0 L water.arrow_forwardA geochemist measures the concentration of salt dissolved in Lake Parsons and finds a concentration of 11.10 g.L-¹. The geochemist also measures the concentration of salt in several nearby non-isolated lakes, and finds an average concentration of 4.30 g⋅L¯¹. Assuming the salt concentration in Lake Parsons before it became isolated was equal to the average salt concentration in nearby non-isolated lakes, calculate the percentage of Lake Parsons which has evaporated since it became isolated. Be sure your answer has the correct number of significant digits.arrow_forwardA chemistry student needs 65.0mL of diethylamine for an experiment. By consulting the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, the student discovers that the density of diethylamine is ·0.706gcm−3 . Calculate the mass of diethylamine the student should weigh out.arrow_forward
- A chemist prepares a solution of nickel(II) chloride NiCl2 by measuring out ×1.010^2μmolof nickel(II) chloride into a 350.mL volumetric flask and filling the flask to the mark with water. Calculate the concentration in mmol/L of the chemist's nickel(II) chloride solution. Be sure your answer has the correct number of significant digits.arrow_forwardA chemistry student needs 70.0mL of pentane for an experiment. By consulting the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, the student discovers that the density of pentane is ·0.626gcm−3 . Calculate the mass of pentane the student should weigh out.arrow_forwardA sample of solid silver oxide with a mass of 11.4 grams was reduced to elemental silver by heating under a flow of methane gas, CH4. The reaction produced 10.6 grams of silver. Write a balanced chemical reaction for the reaction between silver oxide and methane gas. The only products formed in the reaction are solid silver metal, carbon dioxide gas, and water vapor. Include the phases of each reactant and product.arrow_forward
- A chemist prepares a solution of magnesium chloride MgCl2 by measuring out 2.3g of MgCl2 into a 250.mL volumetric flask and filling to the mark with distilled water. Calculate the molarity of Cl− anions in the chemist's solution. Be sure your answer is rounded to the correct number of significant digits.arrow_forwardA sample of 18.11 grams of sodium hydroxide is weighed out on a balance and prepared to a volume of 2.00 x 102 mL in water. What is the molarity of this aqueous solution of NaOH? Express your answer to the correct number of significant figures and include the unit with your answer.arrow_forwardFluoridation is the process of adding fluorine compounds to the drinking water. Fluoridated water can help decrease tooth decay in the population. A concentration of 1 ppm of fluorine is typically required to provide adequate amounts. While daily water consumption per person is 151.0 gallons, most people only consume 7.6 of this water; the rest is used for cleaning or gardening. What percent of the sodium fluoride is “wasted”?arrow_forward
- A chemist prepares a solution of silver(I) nitrate (AgNO3) by measuring out 1.9 × 10 μmol of silver(I) nitrate into a 500. mL volumetric flask and filling the flask to the mark with water. Calculate the concentration in mmol/L of the chemist's silver(I) nitrate solution. Be sure your answer has the correct number of significant digits. mmol L X 3arrow_forwardA student dissolved 230.8 grams of cesium chloride in 100.0 grams of 90 °C water. The student then cooled that solution to 20 °C . That cooled solution formed a solid (or "precipitate"), and after separating and drying this solid the student found that the solid weighed 43.8 grams. What is the solubility of cesium chloride in water at 20 °C ? < calculate your answer as grams of cesium chloride per 100 grams of water, but DO NOT include your units in your answer>arrow_forwardAn aqueous solution of nickel(II) bromide, NiBr2, is made by dissolving 11.2 grams of nickel(II) bromide in sufficient water In a 250. mL volumetric flask, and then adding enough water to fill the flask to the mark.
