This annotated bibliography has reviewed four journal articles or book chapters, three of which are related to a specific topic, and one related to critical thinking in business (see Reference list for full details of the source). The following paper contains annotations and a critical analysis of the published work.

In today’s current school systems, the question of whether or not schools are correctly teaching students the right curriculum is coming up for debate. In the Article,"Teaching Critical Thinking by Marcia Clemmitt, she goes into extensive research of the U.S. Department of Education’s crisis of standardized testing. Most learning activities include standardized testing which lacks many students to express creative and critical thinking. Critical thinking is defined as the examination and evaluation of ideas, events and arguments in their contexts which introduces students to interrogate assumptions and identifying biases (Clemmitt)Pure critical thinking involves investigating a text more than just memorizing, but to apply theirself in other ways of techniques, meaning schools should stimulate more analytical methods of teaching. This would not only free students from a sheltered test culture,but will allow students to think in a deeper,more passionate way than before.

Developing critical thinking and communication skills can be learned by doing many activities. Some not as fun as others, such as a research paper. In my History class at the beginning of the year, our professor broke the bad news of writing a research paper that would be due near the end of the semester. Imagine you’re driving home from a long and trying day at the office, when all of a sudden a car comes zooming into your lane, nearly sending you crashing off the road. Natural instinct might cause you to honk your horn, shout out a series of profanities, or even chase the vehicle down to directly give the driver a piece of your mind.

“Metacognition means thinking about thinking and can be applied in two general ways. It can mean thinking about the way that you learn best.” (Capella University, 2017) The other meaning of metacognition is the process of monitoring progress in thinking and learning in order to improve that way that you think. Monitoring how you learn and which strategies work the best for you, makes you the manager of your own learning. By doing this, it will help you be more successful whether it is with your school work, work at your job, and/or anything else that requires thinking.

Critical thinking is meaningful and beneficial in many ways. It is not about the criticizing, instead, it is the thinking about the thinking process. It reflects our own thoughts and perceptions towards certain situation. In my personal experience, by practicing thinking critically, gives me the chance to build up my skills on thinking objectively, and non-judgmentally. It also reminds me of analyzing the situation from different perspectives. And this helps me to be more empathetic about client’s struggles. It is through critical thinking that one is able to excel however, in order to achieve a plan must be in place. By reflecting on the day’s activities, one is able to calculate and weigh options that were present thus coming up with the best and efficient way of handling the task at hand.

A well thought out critique of one’s actions or thinking is immensely valuable. While hearing this constructive criticism may be uncomfortable, the information one gains from another’s insights is advantageous. In psychology lesson 3 has many interesting filled topics one of them being absolute threshold. The definition of absolute threshold is the weakest amount of a given stimulus that a person can detect half of the time. This is extremely interesting because it shows the capabilities of human beings and our senses tested to the max. The picture in lesson 3.2 shows all the five senses and the absolute threshold of a human. The most interesting representation is sight due humans being able to see a candle flames 30 miles away on a night in idle conditions. The second most intrigued sense would be smell due to humans being able to smell one drop of perfume in a three room house. The third most fascinating example is taste due to humans being able to taste one teaspoon in two gallons of sugars. This is important information to know as a result of letting people know the limits of our senses and that us humans aren’t using our senses to our best potential.

I am always open to see new perspectives and if I can find any truth in new ideas I will support it. I feel my openness has been become stronger working with my peers from different areas of the world. They have helped me see different views and perspectives and that has helped me with writing from their views not just my own.

Greek philosopher Socrates left a legacy of critical thinking that shaped the fundamentals of what philosophy is today. It’s worthy to distinguish that such legacy was recorded in history by the writings of some of his students and not by work of his own. Socrates was a curious Athenian whose hunger for knowledge led him to breakthrough a big truth, to an epiphany; as much as he knew, he was still ignorant, but he was aware of his ignorance. The knowing of his own lack of knowledge is what set him apart from the rest of his peers.
