Isoprene unit contains five carbon atoms. The carbon atoms of isoprene unit are connected by sigma bond or pi bond. Terpenes and terpenoids contain unequal number of isoprene units. Lanosterol is triterpenoid with four rings. It is used to derive animal and fungal steroids.
