Chapter 37, Problem 14TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

The reason for the requirement of additional research on the fundamental biological roles of GA (gibberellins) based on its role in Arabidopsis thalliana.

Introduction:

In the given study, a pickle (pkl) mutation is present in Arabidopsis thaliana plant. This mutation results in the retention of embryonic tissue in the primary root meristem. It was observed that on exposure to gibberellins the mutant root tissue does not spontaneously generate new embryos, which were earlier capable of growing into new plants.

Green fluorescent protein (GFP) can attach and mark other proteins with fluorescence, enabling scientists to see the presence of a particular protein. In an experiment to understand the molecular physiology behind the GA-induced seed germination, a GFP-tagged protein was observed to be moving from the cytoplasm into the nucleus of aleurone layer cells before the detection of alpha-amylase in the endosperm. Based on your knowledge, identify the possible protein(s) with which the GFP is attached in the given situation. Justify your answer.
Can you answer all the parts to this question please  (a) What are the advantages of the self-incompatibility (SI) system in plants? Give at least three advantages.  (b) What are the differences between gametophytic SI and sporophytic SI?
If the PIN2 gene is rendered non-functional by mutation it dramatically reduces the speed of the gravitropic response in the root. Explain what PIN proteins do and why the loss on PIN2 would likely affect the speed of the gravitropic response.
