Modern American society beliefs have influenced my identity, values, and beliefs. The American society believes highly in technology, which influences my beliefs, and has me relying on technology for many things. However the american society also shapes my beliefs in a different way, if there is something that America, as a society believes in, then I may find myself believing the opposite, simply because I didn't want my opinion to be made by society. Cultural relativism is the idea that morality is about objective facts, and different communities have different morals. Just because they may be different than other communities, it doesn’t mean they are wrong. Gensler points out several problems with this idea, the biggest one being that it forces us to conform to society. Gensler uses an example with a figure skater named Lika Rebel who is from a Nazi country. Even though the majority of the society believes that putting Jews in concentration camps is okay, she disagrees. If you were to apply cultural relativism, Lika wouldn’t be able to think otherwise because it is what her society approves of and is believed to be good. If you asked most Americans what the cultural values in the U.S. are, you might get some blank stares, or a statement of some basic beliefs. Religion had both positive and negative impact on the lives of Americans before the Civil war. It influenced the morals, rules and regulations of the colonies. Most of the colonies were established based on Christian beliefs and values. There was great religious diversity; Massachusetts was populated with pilgrims and puritans, the Quakers in Pennsylvania and Catholics in Maryland. Each colony believed in their faith and expected everyone to follow their religion. Puritans believed that they had been ordained by God to create a puritan society and did not believe in religious tolerance. The Catholics on the other hand dominated Maryland and the Quakers dominated Pennsylvania. Catholics and Protestants did not approve of each other religion. These divisions resulted in the persecutions of those who had different beliefs causing settlement of different groups in different colonies, hence the establishment of different states in America.
