Chapter 43, Problem 14TYK
Summary Introduction

To review:

That characteristics of vertebrate muscles were inherited from invertebrate ancestors.

Introduction:

The skeletal structure of both vertebrates and invertebrates provide a framework and support system to the body along with locomotion and movement. There is relatively much difference in the bone and muscle structure of vertebrates and invertebrates, but studies have shown that there are a few striking similarities that suggest that the complex muscle structure of vertebrates has evolved from a relatively simpler muscle structure of the invertebrates.

A study of muscle fibers between chimpanzees and humans revealed that although muscle mass per body size are approximately equivalent, the ratio of red (slow) and white (fast) fibers were significantly different. Chimps tend to have a ratio of 30% red to 70% white where humans are 60/40 respectively.  Speculate about what this ratio difference means in terms of muscle activity potential and a possible evolutionary significance of this difference.
In what way are mammalian gates related to the molecular structure of muscle? (Add examples) If possible in a paragraph.
During the contraction of a vertebrate skeletal muscle fiber, calcium ions(A) break cross-bridges as a cofactor in hydrolysis of ATP.(B) bind with troponin, changing its shape so that the myosinbinding sites on actin are exposed.(C) transmit action potentials from the motor neuron to themuscle fiber.(D) spread action potentials through the T tubules.
