Chapter 11, Problem 11.3P

A shell-and-tube heat exchanger is to heat an acidic liquidthat flows in untinned tubes of inside and outside diameters D i = 10 mm and D o = 11 mm, respectively. A hotgas flows on the shell side. To avoid corrosion of the tubematerial, the engineer may specify either a Ni-Cr-Mocorrosion-resistant metal alloy ( ρ m = 8900  kg/m 3 ,   k m = 8  W/m K ) or a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) plastic ( ρ p = 1780  kg/m 3 ,   k p = 0.17  W/m K ) . The inner andouter heat transfer coefficients are h i = 1500  W/m 2 K and h o = 200  W/m 2 K , respectively.
(a) Determine the ratio of plastic to metal tube surface areas needed to transfer the same amount of heat.
(b) Determine the ratio of plastic to metal muss associated with the two heat exchanger designs.
(c) The cost of the metal alloy per Unit muss is threetimes that of the plastic. Determine which tubematerial should be specified on the basis of cost.

In any heat exchanger, the log mean temperature difference "could" be the same as the mean "average" temperature difference of both ends of the heat exchanger, depending on the temperature profile within that heat exchanger along heat exchanger tubes. Select one: OTrue O False At very low pressures (vacuum), the thermal conductivity of gases approaches zero. Select one: O True O False
Due higher viscosity, the heat-transfer coefficient of moving liquid hydrocarbons is generally higher than that of moving water Select one: O True O False The proper strategy to enhance heat transfer of a heat exchanger is trying to increase the heat transfer coefficient of the side with the lower heat resistant. Select one: O True O False For the universal 3-D heat transfer equation (see topic 7 in URCourses notes), we have to simplify by eliminating terms that are zero or near zero first, and then we can only use numerical methods (such as finite difference) to solve those problems. Select one: O True O False
A shell-and-tube heat exchanger is used to cool compressed liquid methanol from 176 °F to 104 °F. The methanol flows on the shell side of the exchanger. The coolant is water that rises in temperature from 50 °F to 86 °F and flows within the tubes at a rate of 68.9 kg s-1. Finding the appropriate thermophysical data and applying the proper equations, you are required to do the following:
