Question
Chapter 6, Problem 6.26P
Interpretation Introduction
Interpretation:
Among the two given acids, A and B, it is to be predicted which one is more acidic.
Concept introduction:
An acid is a chemical substance that readily donates a proton and forms a conjugate base.
The strength of an acid is related to the stability of the conjugate base. Least stable the conjugate base, weaker the acid. The presence of inductively electron withdrawing groups increases the stability of a conjugate base, increasing the strength of the acid.
As the distance between the electron withdrawing group and the charge of the conjugate base increases, the stabilizing effect decreases. This decreases strength of acid.
