I. New World Beginning • The discovery of the New World affected not only Europe and the Americans but other continents as well. A. The Shaping of North America 1. North America was shaped when it drifted from the other continents and the landscaped was formed natural occurrences throughout the years. a) Mountains were formed by the movement of the Earth’s crust. b) The Ice Age left glaciers in most of northern Canada and America. (1) Lakes formed from melted glaciers. (2) Basins were also formed. B. People the Americas 1. As interest in the Americas grew, Spain claimed the discovery and became a dominant power in colonization. a) Vasco Nunez Balboa declared he’d claim all the land the Pacific Ocean touches for the king. b) Ferdinand Magellan went around the South American tip trough a strait, which is now named after him, with five ships. c) The Spaniards went to North America in search of gold. (1) Juan Ponce de Leon explored Florida in hopes to find gold and maybe also the “fountain of youth.” (2) Francisco Coronado tried to find the golden cities but just explored through Arizona, New Mexico, and Kansas, finding the Grand Canyon and bison. (3) Hernando de Soto explored Florida to find gold but instead he discovered and crossed the Mississippi River. d) The Spaniards also explored and conquered in the South. (1) Francisco Pizarro conquered the Incas. (2) The Spanish were getting precious metals from mines in the New World like in Mexico. H. Puritans versus Indians 1. In the New England area, the Indians were relatively weak, and an epidemic had killed many of them. a) The Wampanoag tribe was in no condition to resist the settlers, so they made a treaty and even celebrated the first Thanksgiving with them. b) As the settlers moved inland, the peace was destroyed (1) The English had sieged the Pequot village and nearly annihilated the whole tribe. c) The puritans tried to convert the Indians but not with nearly as much effort as the Spanish and French did. d) Intertribal alliances against the English attacked many English villages and destroyed. (1) The leader, Metacom, was beheaded while his wife and son were sold. I. Seeds of Colonial Unity and Independence 1. With Civil War in England, the northern colonies joined together to form the New England Confederation to deal with intercolonial problems. a) Each colony had two votes only, which was upsetting to Massachusetts due to their large population. b) The confederation consisted of puritan colonies— the bay colony, Plymouth, New Haven, and the Connecticut valley
