Introduction:

There are two types of amino acids based on the kind of metabolic product it generates when catabolized. The amino acids that are catabolized to form acetyl-CoA or acetoacetyl-CoA can form ketone bodies and are thus known as ketogenic amino acids. Whereas some amino acids are degraded to form pyruvate, fumarate, oxaloacetate, and more that can convert to glucose, and hence, they are known as glucogenic amino acids. Some amino acids can be both ketogenic and glucogenic.
