Chapter 15, Problem 41RQ
Summary Introduction
To review:
The molecules that cause the odor in the urine in maple syrup urine disease.
Introduction:
The first genetic disease recognized is the defects caused by amino acid catabolism. It is caused due to defects in genetic codes, or due to mutations (changes in the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid). Examples of such diseases are maple syrup urine disease, phenylketonuria (PKU), alkaptonuria, and albinism. Thus, metabolism plays an important role as, because of it, the body changes food into energy.
